Office Cleaning Tips for the Break Room Fridge

Posted on June 19, 2017

When it comes to cleaning an office, certain areas deserve extra attention. Next to your bathrooms, the break room in your office is the number one magnet for bacteria and other germs. One of the biggest problem areas in the break room is the office fridge. Between crumbs, spills, stains, and that expired yogurt no one wants to fess up to, your break room’s fridge has earned the extra attention on your next office cleaning.

To help you keep your break room fridge in order, the office cleaning pros at JAN-PRO suggest using the guidelines below when cleaning and maintaining your break room fridge. By following these tips, you’ll be able to maintain a healthier, more attractive break room for your staff.

Perform a Weekly Check for Expired Foods

Certain foods can funk up a fridge in just a few days after they’ve expired. To prevent spoiled food from creating a stink (or worse) in your break room, perform a weekly check for any expired foods. If you find items past their expiry date, dispose of the items then and there.

One tip we recommend is marking undated food with small colored stickers from the local dollar store.  At the end of each week, use a single color of sticker to mark each item that’s missing an expiry date. When you come back the next week, you’ll be able to see any food that’s still left over from your previous clean.

Perform a Monthly Light Cleaning

Spills, stains, and pieces of food can easily build up in your fridge if you don’t wipe down the interior on a regular basis. We suggest a monthly a light cleaning of your break room fridge, though you will want to clean more often if your fridge gets a lot of use.

To clean the interior of your fridge, use a gentle cleaning solution. Water and a drop of dish detergent or water and vinegar will both make effective solutions. Clear out food, spray all walls and shelves, and give the interior a thorough wipe-down with a cloth or paper towels.

Perform a Bi-Yearly Deep Clean

You should perform a deep clean on your office fridge at least twice a year. A non-scratching scrubber sponge can help you get rid of stuck-on gunk. You can also use a water and baking soda mixture to break down stubborn build-up and neutralize lingering smells.

When you perform a deep clean on your fridge, you should also vacuum its coils. This improves fridge performance and extends your refrigerator’s lifespan.
