Clean Your Screen: Dealing with Germs on Cell Phones

Despite their clean design, modern smartphones are pretty much as dirty as can be. How dirty? Try, eighteen-times-more-germs-than-a-toilet-seat dirty. That’s right, with over 25,000 bacteria per square inch, there are more germs on your cell phone than almost any other object you touch on a day to day basis.

With the amount of time we spend touching our phones, that can be a health concern. Because it’s not just your germs on your cell phone. Your phone’s also covered in the germs you picked up from the bathroom doorknob, the office dish sponge, and the table at your favorite dive bar. Those germs hang out on your phone screen and will stay there until you do something about it.

The good news is that’s it’s easy to clean and sanitize your cell phone. So long as you have five minutes and a handful of easy-to-find cleaning items, you can drastically reduce the amount of germs on your phone.

Here’s how…

How to Get Rid of Germs on Your Cell Phone

In order to clean germs on your cell phone, all you need is some rubbing alcohol, some Q-tips, and a microfiber cloth. Rubbing alcohol acts as a disinfectant. Meanwhile, microfiber is renowned for its ability to trap bacteria. It’s the same kind of material used in Jan-Pro® commercial cleaning services for cloths and flat mops.

This process takes just a few minutes, and will drastically reduce the number of bacteria that call your smartphone’s screen home.

Materials:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Q-tips

Directions:

  1. Use a small amount of rubbing alcohol to dampen the microfiber cloth. Be careful not to over-dampen the microfiber cloth.
  2. Gently wipe down your phone’s screen, sides, and backing. Do your best to clean out cracks and crevices with the microfiber cloth.
  3. Dampen a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol (again, just use a little) and go over cracks and crevices to make sure any hidden or hard-to-reach germs are taken care of.

Using this method to clean your phone will drastically reduce the number of germs on your cell phone. But remember that germs pile up quickly. Good hygiene, smart use of your phone, and cleaning your phone regularly will help you keep your cell phone germ-free as often as possible.
